Student Organization Ethics Board
Students at Indiana University are held accountable to the University Student Code of Conduct.  The student code can be found at the following link: http://www.iu.edu/~code/code/index.shtml

For more information regarding the student organization ethics board process, visit http://sao/ethics_board.html

Internal Standards Board

Indiana University supports and challenges student organizations to be self-governing and to hold their members accountable internally. It is an expectation that all fraternities and sororities have an internal standards board that holds members accountable to their organization’s purpose and policies as well as University policies when violated. Chapter leaders can contact their respective University advisor to discuss how to create, implement or better utilize a standards board.

Risk Management links and information

Fraternities and Sororities are expected to uphold the University policies in the areas of safety and risk management as well as their individual organization’s policies. Please refer to your organization’s risk management policy. If there is a conflict in policies, you must err on the side of the more stringent policy.  Fraternal Information and Programming Group (FIPG) helps with risk management education and resources. Most fraternities and sororities function under the FIPG policy. It is a valuable resource for all risk management officers and presidents.

Hazing

Anti-hazing statement of policy Indiana University - Bloomington

Indiana University is an institution of higher education devoted to excellence in teaching, research and service to the people of the state and the nation. A part of that mission is fulfilled by the University's commitment to the development of students through academic and co-curricular activities. As one of the University housing options available, men's and women's fraternities have the potential to contribute significantly to a student's intellectual and personal development. In keeping with its commitment to a positive academic environment, Indiana University unconditionally opposes any situation created intentionally to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Freedom from the humiliation and danger of hazing is of vital interest to the University, and it will respond to every allegation of hazing promptly and thoroughly.

Definition of Hazing

According to the University Code of Students Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct, “Hazing is defined as any conduct that subjects another person, whether physically, mentally, emotionally, or psychologically, to anything that may endanger, abuse, degrade, or intimidate the person as a condition of association with a group or organization, regardless of the person’s consent or lack of consent.”  Any chapter or individual activity which may be construed as meeting this definition will be treated as hazing. Indiana University interprets hazing in a manner consistent with the Fraternity Executives Association in its Statement of Hazing and Pre-Initiation Activities (copies available upon request). In essence, hazing is defined as any act whether physical, mental, emotional, or psychological, which subjects another person, voluntarily or involuntarily, to anything that may abuse, mistreat, degrade, humiliate, harass or intimidate him or her, or which may in any fashion compromise his/her inherent dignity as a person. Hazing is also a violation of Indiana state law and violators face penalties of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
